I guess I'm sorry I had to lay you down,
but no one gets to push me around.
Last night I once again strained my uni student bank account by attending a live gig, 20 dollar entry but more than worth it. Crowds littered the street, the gig was sold out, so was the rest of their tour. A little Sydney band hit big with the help of Triple J and their unique smooth sultry sound, which could be known as the counter birth control. Although they only made it in the 90s of top 100 this year, many sad faces.
Coincidentally my favourite band played on the exact same spot I had my last birthday. The stars have aligned! The venue is like an enchanted garden and last night was invaded by sharply dressed and intoxicated music lovers who came to get up, get up and get down. Two bands played before the main act, they were quite exceptional, the first a young local band with puberty still clinging to their awkward frames but with a mature and polished sound.
I don't mind cause I speak my mind sometimes
The second were quite a bit older, with a garage band 1950s feel they rocked the crowd into a frenzy. Covered in sailor tattoos, ripped up band tee's and a large fancy bottle of scotch they added a level of effortless cool to their set, the drummer even managing to have a sneaky smoke whilst smashing his skins.
But we were all really there for one reason, The Rubens. When they began to set up the air was electric. The crowds had braved the rain and now the heat of this little shed and all they wanted was to cry along to their favourite songs. Needless to say I pushed through the crowd to the front of the stage, there was not going to be any barrier between me and those sultry sounds. The crowd moved like a rough ocean during the Rubens set, heaving back and forth in euphoric bliss. However in typical unpredictable ocean behaviour, the waves smashed debris onto shore. One poor girl face planted right into the lead singer on stage due to the ruckus going on in the mosh behind her, another knocked an amp in a fall.
Luckily I stayed up and at the front, so close I could see the rise and fall of the lead singers adams apple and the way the key boarder would bite his lip at the songs chorus'. It was nostalgic and exciting. Another beloved band crossed off my list and some how I fell in deeper love with songs I had listened to on repeat. Afterwards I sat around like a fat cat in the sun completely chuffed.
Open my eyes, my body cold,
it shouldn't end this way I want to grow old.
I wouldn't change my addiction for the World.
