Lecture 7

The Jesus of the Media Scene; Public Media 

Last week the lecture focused on the Judas, the shady lady, the evil step sibling; Commercial Media. This week we learned about the good guy, the all rounder, the charity fella; Public Media. To boil it all down Public Media doesn't answer to any big corporations, they don't have advertisers breathing down their necks to promote products. They do as they please and tell it how it is.

I have noticed when watching television news that the stories played on Channel 7, say the 6pm Project are vastly different to what is shown on SBS news. Commercial Media seems to sugar coat and sensationalise stories where as Public Media tells the facts and gets to the hard points. I know Public Media gets it wrong sometimes, but lets be honest its the lesser of two evils.

I found the point raised in the lecture quite interesting, that the Government shouldn't like the ABC, the day they do is the day we have lost control of Public Media. This thought gave me a sense of ownership over Public Media. I know which I will favour now for my news stories.

The whole devision of media has blown my mind, I really had no idea about television channels. In turn I often got sucked into the traps and lay an easy victim to those big mean advertisers and their shiny products.
